Collonges-la-Rouge can be found 23 kilometres south of Brive in the Limousin region. A trip to this truly remarkable site with its traffic-free winding roads will transport you back to another time, the time of legends and fairytales where knights, princesses and lords reigned supreme.

Famous for its medieval manors and mansions and entirely constructed in red sandstone (which lends its name to the village), Collonges-la-Rouge is classified among France's Most Beautiful Villages. This unique feature has a geological explanation: the fault spanning the Brive Basin in Meyssac marks a break between calcareous soils and sandstone soils. Some sandstone takes on a red colour thanks to iron oxide, making it a characterisitic of local natural heritage.

Being a small village, Collonges-la-Rouge doesn't take long to explore but contains several remarkable monuments.

Not to be missed

  • Saint-Pierre church: This 12th century Romanesque church has an impressive entryway and limestone typanum which contrast with the red sandstone.
  • Vassinhac castle: Dating back to 1583, this chateau with two hexagonal towers and conical-shaped turrets is well preserved and maintained.
  • The many 16th century manors: Collonges-la-Rouge has many impressive former homes, such as the houses of Ramade de la Serre (with a square tower), de la Sirène (with a mermaid sculpture outside) and of Vassinhacs, Maussacs and Benges.
  • The Penitent's Chapel built in the 15th century and the permanent exhibit it houses.
  • The village's traditional bread oven
