Feel Atlantic Loire: for lovers of history and the outdoors

‘Atlantic Loire’ isn’t a definitive French region, but for many visitors, making the differentiation between the Loire Valley (a famous destination straddling two regions) and Pays de la Loire (a single geographical region) can be confusing. The region of Pays de la Loire encompasses half of the Loire Valley (explore more here), but there’s much more to the region besides: a string of chic Atlantic resorts with beautiful beaches; exquisite islands; vibrant historic cities including Nantes and Le Mans; nationally-renowned cycling trails; vineyards, major festivals and a much-loved theme park.

The region is defined by its rivers as well as its coastline – the Loire, the Sarthe and the Mayenne – and it’s a paradise for outdoorsy types. As well as watersports and cycling you can enjoy horse-riding and golf in abundance here, or simply recharge your batteries at a thalassotherapy spa. It’s a great destination for both an action-packed family holiday and a more sedate break for friends or couples, as well as being a mecca for lovers of history and gastronomy. And with more traditional arts and crafts than you can shake a stick at, you’d better ensure you have plenty of space in your luggage for local fabrics, ceramics and much more.
