More than 120 Christmas markets are held throughout Alsace, from the North to the South of the region. Each has its own distinctive character. In Obernai, visitors can explore the Christmas food market. In Mulhouse they can admire the luxurious Christmas fabric market. For its part, in Strasbourg they can enjoy strolling in the popular Christkindelsmärik…

When the advent period arrives in Alsace, the towns and villages create amazing atmospheres as they weave their Christmas magic. The streets are clad in sparkling decorations, the building facades come to life and the monuments are lit up. In all, more than 70 Alsatian towns and villages stand out for their fairy tale atmosphere. Finally, almost 1000 events are organised at Christmas across the region. Lively performances can be enjoyed all across Alsace, much to the delight of visitors to the region.

All the secrets of Alsatian Christmas fare can be discovered during dozens of cookery workshops organised throughout the advent period. More than 60 workshops look forward to welcoming budding artists, who can try their hand at all kinds of creative leisure activities such as making advent crowns or greeting cards.

The oldest Christmas market of France

Strasbourg's Christmas market is one of the main events to be held each year. In 2015, it will be...445 years old! It is the oldest market in France, no doubt. The atmosphere in Strasbourg is then unique. The real magic however happens at the end of the day, when the sun sets and the town seems to compensate the drop in temperatures by striving to shine even more: the facades are laid with adornments, the windows sparkle, the smell of spices and cinnamon bring back childhood memories and the churches send out Christmas carols. Several hundreds of shopkeepers and artisans offer to the passersby original gifts and traditional artefacts to decorate the Christmas trees and adorn the cribs. Of course, you can also find enough to treat your taste buds, such as treats and sweets, bredle, mulled wine, and much more. The giant Christmas tree which towers the place Kléber is the highest decorated natural tree in Europe.

The fairy tale mystery of Christmas helps us to rediscover the emotion and authenticity which survives with love and humility in all of our hearts, during this special celebration, as the one most synonymous with sharing. Whether you live here or elsewhere, the moment you cross the Vosges you will be struck by the sentiment of subtle intimacy, by a genuine and precious atmosphere, that of Christmas in Alsace.
