French Treats: Olive Oil
To anyone who forgets that France is also a Mediterannean country, we encourage you to tour the olive oil mills of Provence for a lovely reminder. From the hilltop terraces of Manosque to the silvery-green valleys of Les Baux-de-Provence, the region is littered with oil tastings, and no two are alike.
Name: Olive oil
Origin: Ancestral
Type: Mediterranean trilogy: wheat, wine, and olives
Time: From the October harvest to February, depending on the area
Pros: Variety, from the herby green to cocoa-y black fruit
Cons: Rarity
Signs of quality:
  • An opaque bottle to protect the oil from light
  • An "Appellation d’Origine Protégée" stamp
  • The name of the producer or miller on the label
  • A beautiful mouthfeel, indicating the presence of antioxidents.
