Brittany, a sustainale destination with natural and cultural assets
With its 2,730 kilometres of coastline, Brittany ’s heart beats in time with the tides, which are among the highest in Europe. A land of nature and wild scenery, where the air is filled with the scent of sea spray, fields and gardens, Brittany is a haven for carefully-protected biodiversity.
Brittany is Celtic through and through and is proud of its identity, drawing energy from a unique historic heritage. Constantly reinventing its traditions, Brittany has become France’s number one region for festivals, water sports and walking.
Brittany is well-connected and harbours another great treasure: the people who live here. Historically, Brittany was the home port of many explorers, and it’s still as outward-looking today. Bretons of every generation have a great sense of hospitality and love letting their hair down. You don’t have to be born here, you can become Breton by sharing the passion.
2017 was the “International Year of Sustainable Tourism”. This UN decision is a real opportunity for Brittany, already deeply committed in the development and promotion of a sustainable tourism development approach, and has recently entered the Worldwide Sustainable Destinations Top 100 alongside the Grand Canyon National Park and the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
Brittany, ideal for cycling
For families : Come and explore the countryside on Brittany’s Greenways network of safe trails and enjoy country outings and exercise at the same time. Here, there are no cars allowed, only cyclists, walkers and roller skaters (horse riding is permitted along certain stretches). The clear sign posting and specially adapted surfaces will help you cover the length and breadth of Brittany, around 2000km spread over 8 different trails.
For others: Tour de Manche and Velodyssey: Cyclists and lovers of fresh air, rejoice! With more than 1300 km of cycle paths and greenways, all over Brittany and around the sea channel, the whole region is a bike-friendly place! From the outstanding network which criss-crosses this region between land and sea, linking ‘cités de caractère’ (towns of character) set in nature conservation areas, here are two great European routes.
Travelling along the canals
Travelling along a canal with family or friends – what could be easier? No need to be an expert navigator. You can hire a boat with cabins without a license for the weekend or for a week. For day trips there are also electric-powered boats, or maybe you would like to try a short cruise.
From the City of the Dukes of Brittany to the iconic Breton port, the Nantes-Brest canal crosses Brittany right through its middle. As one lock succeeds another along the length of its preserved natural setting, this route takes you to the heart of the ‘petites Cités de Caractère’ (small towns of character) and to the foot of picturesque chateaux. An ideal family trip! Iconic route, the Nantes-Brest canal.
GR34: This is one of the most iconic pathways of the French Grande Randonnée® (GR) hiking trail network. The GR® 34 ‘sentier des douaniers’ runs for more than 1,800 km along the entire Breton coastline, featuring stunning views over the sea. An unforgettable experience!
The ‘sentier des douaniers’ was created back in 1791 to criss-cross the coastline and prevent the smuggling of contraband goods. The path fell into disrepair in the early 20th Century, but has enjoyed a new lease of life since 1968, with the appearance of the famous red and white trail markings close to Lannion, that act as signpost markers for the route. Nowadays the GR® 34 runs all around the Breton shoreline from the Mont-Saint-Michel to the Arzal barrage (Morbihan ).
