It’s a pastry shop, pretty as a sweet shop, where Beaune’s food lovers flock, but they’re not alone – savvy tourists also stop off in this tea room that’s just a stone’s throw from the market. On its blue benches or out on the terrace, it’s just the place for a lunch break or tea time French-style, because as Lewis Carrol wrote, even in the land where wine is king, "it’s always time for tea"!
Voted "Best Pastry Chef in France" in 2015 by Gault & Millau, and after touring the planet, Fabien Berteau laid his hat in Beaune in 2016 to open his chic boutique in the historic centre with his wife, Marie.
An inspired pastry chef who feeds his creativity through travel and meeting others, he retains the sense of conviviality from his time in Australia, along with his honest taste in pastries, praline and a signature dessert: cheesecake which he changes with the seasons – mango, passion fruit, pear. Creative desserts and tasty delicacies are his trademark, but you can just as easily fall for his delicious fruit tarts, fresh from the market. The chef swears by freshness, "just made" treats and seasonal products, so it’s not unusual to find him early in the morning at Beaune’s market in search of strawberries, raspberries and so on.
On the savoury side, don’t miss out on his pâté en croute, a tradition honoured by every pastry chef in France since the Middle Ages, along with his delicious savoury pies and sandwiches of the day.
To accompany these dishes, the establishment offers a large selection of coffees, green and black teas from all four corners of the globe, pressed and organic orange juice.
One more reason to treat yourself to a moment of pure indulgence, perhaps? An eclectic playlist of classical or jazz music, specially put together by Marie, a musician in her own right.
