"Being Modern: MoMA in Paris" at the Fondation Louis Vuitton

Until 5 March 2018

The Frank Gehry-designed Fondation Louis Vuitton hosts 200 works selected to document the role of MoMA, the celebrated New York museum, as a collector.

The celebrated New York Museum and the Fondation Louis Vuitton have joined forces to showcase the outstanding collections of MoMA in France for the first time...
This transdisciplinary selection of 200 works from six departments of MoMA occupies the entire Frank Ghery-designed building. Hosted jointly by the two institutions, the exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, films, digital works, performance art and architectural and design objects that reflect the multiple facets of the collections held by the New York Museum, which together contain around 200,000 works!

The exhibition features masterpieces by artists as diverse as Cézanne, Calder, Picasso, Duchamp, Beckmann, Klimt, Kirchner, Kusama, Magritte, Hopper, Pollock, Brancusi, Signac and Warhol. Being modern: MoMA in Paris documents the history of the museum founded in 1929 through a broad spectrum of works acquired from the first formative movements of modern art through to the most recent digital pieces via minimalism and Pop Art. One of the most contemporary works in the exhibition is the original set of 176 emoji designed by Shigetaka Kurita.

The Fondation Louis Vuitton is showing some of these works for the first time ever in France. The exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity to (re)discover the architecture and design of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, which provides an exceptional showcase for these works in exhibition spaces flooded with natural light and offering unique perspectives.
