Air France celebrates its 85th anniversary

As the oldest air transport company in France, the Compagnie Générale Transaérienne takes the Air France history back to 1909 which mainly operated airships and seaplanes.

The first passenger airlines appeared at the end of WWI. Pierre-Georges Latécoère launched Les Lignes Latécoère in 1918 to carry mail. This was followed by l'Aéronavale, les Grands Express Aériens, Les Lignes Farman and others in 1919.

The Compagnie de Navigation Franco-Roumaine was set up the following year.

Encouraged by the Minister for Air Transport, Pierre Cot, the major French airlines joined forces. Air Orient, Air Union, Lignes Farman, CIDNA and, later, Aéropostale joined by merger and acquisition to become a single national airline. Its headquarters was established in Air Orient's premises at 2, rue Marbeuf in Paris, and took over its winged seahorse logo. The new airline was officially declared open on 7 October 1933 at Le Bourget, the country's main airport.

Today, Air France (External link) is a global airline of French inspiration. From its hubs at Paris-Orly and Paris-Charles de Gaulle airports, the airline operates flights to 195 destinations, 91 countries, and more than 36 destinations in France.
