De Beaurepaire Wines & Rylstone Estate
Founded in 1998 by Richard and Janet de Beaurepaire and now joined by their children Will and Amanda, de Beaurepaire Wines is a ‘terroir’ focused French-style wine producer from Rylstone within the Central Ranges (near Mudgee and Orange) of NSW. The family originates in Burgundy and the extended family has been producing wine in the Yarra Valley since 1970.
Much like the move by many Burgundian families to Oregon in the USA, searching for alternatives to Burgundy, Richard and Janet decided to pioneer wine production Rylstone due to its similarity to the terroir of the Côte d’Or. It has an inland, very cool continental climate with temperatures similar to Central Otago and Tasmania. The shallow sandy-loam soils sit atop a limestone layer previously mined nearby by Kandos Cement to build the Harbour Bridge. In Burgundy, vineyards are only planted on limestone hence the dimensions of the Cote d’Or are restricted to the limestone layer near surface which is approximately 60km long by 1.5km wide.
The family produces 15 different wines utilising a mixture of French and Australian techniques using only grapes grown on their sustainably farmed 53-hectare (130 acre) vineyard. The wines can only be found at their cellar door or in great bars, restaurants and hotels. In 2018 they were awarded by Winestate Magazine, ‘Best Australian Wine’ – a first for an NSW producer since the award inception 40 years ago and Best Australian and New Zealand Dessert Wine. The Rylstone Estate wine label is a special project of Will de Beaurepaire’s to explore and experiment still within the general French/Australian ethos of the family’s winery but across more adventurous employment of techniques against traditional varieties.
